Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an increasingly important consideration for accounting and finance professionals as organisations explore new ways to improve efficiency, enhance decision-making and manage routine administrative processes. While much of the discussion around AI often focuses on technological innovation, the more immediate question facing many practitioners is how these tools can be applied in a practical and controlled manner within day-to-day operations.

On 21 October, the Malta Institute of Accountants will host a session exploring the growing role of AI in accounting workflows and examining some of the considerations that arise when selecting and implementing AI-enabled solutions.

Across the profession, businesses are continually evaluating the extent to which AI can support activities that have traditionally relied on significant manual effort. Administrative and processing tasks remain a substantial component of many finance functions, and organisations continue to seek opportunities to improve the accuracy, consistency and timeliness of information while reducing the burden of repetitive work.

The rapid expansion of AI tools has also broadened the range of options available to practitioners. Some solutions operate as stand-alone applications capable of supporting a wide variety of tasks, while others are integrated directly into existing business and accounting platforms. As AI capabilities become more widely embedded across software ecosystems, organisations are faced with strategic decisions about how these tools fit within their existing technology environment and operational needs.

At the same time, the adoption of AI raises wider considerations that extend beyond efficiency gains alone. Issues such as data quality, governance, oversight and professional judgement remain central to the effective use of technology within the accounting profession. While automated processes may support routine activities, finance professionals continue to play a critical role in interpreting information, assessing outputs and ensuring that appropriate controls remain in place.

The discussion surrounding AI is therefore focused on understanding where technology can provide the greatest value while recognising the importance of maintaining sound governance and accountability. As organisations continue to invest in digital transformation initiatives, the ability to evaluate different approaches to AI adoption is becoming a valuable skill for finance teams and professional advisers alike.

In this context, the CPE session will provide practical insights into how AI is being applied within accounting environments and the factors organisations may wish to consider when assessing different AI-enabled solutions for financial processes.
